On the surface, office jobs in Hollywood and South Florida seem much safer than many other workplace options. There is no heavy machinery, the way there might be in an industrial environment. There aren’t the risks associated with construction or forestry work. Despite this, office workers in Hollywood and across Florida do face hazards in the workplace and each year workers in these seemingly “safe” environments end up seriously injured or even killed on the job.

Whether your business is looking to work with another company in southern Florida, or you are a new employee starting a position at a business, or you will be interacting with an organization for some other reason, there are lots of situations where you need to effectively determine how safe a business is. For example, if you will be working with a southern Florida supplier, you may need to ensure that they are safe so your company will be less likely to face litigation. If you’re a new employee, you want to make sure your new employers are taking your safety seriously.

The injury and illness rate of retail workers is disproportionately high. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), in 2014 the injury and illness rate for retail workers was 3.6 per 100 workers (based on reported incidents). In comparison, the rate of injury and illnesses across all industries was 3.4 per 100 workers. Retail workers that year actually had the same rate of injury as workers in the construction industry.

At this time of year, many students look for part-time or full-time summer jobs in Homestead and across South Florida to raise some money for cars, clothes, or just pocket money. If you have a teenager or younger child looking for a paper route, office job, temp job, or other employment, make sure that your child knows how to stay safe.

One of the risks with summer employment for Hollywood youth is that there is a high risk of injury. Studies and research have shown that youth may be less protected than other workers because they do not have seniority and may be hired on a contractor or temp basis, meaning that they do not have the same protections as full-time employees.

Construction site accidents in Miami and other accidents in dangerous workplaces don’t surprise most of us. However, even office jobs can result in workplace injury. If you feel that you are safe because you work in a high-rise or are primarily at a desk, know that there are dangers to your job. You may be at risk of:

1) Workplace violence.

Many people are surprised to realize how often workplace violence can affect Miami and Florida workers in offices and white-collar jobs. During April, for example, people who work in some parts of the financial industry may face violence from others as clients become upset or stressed out over their situations.

In all workplaces, coworkers can also sometimes be aggressive in the workplace, which can lead to serious injury. Employers are expected to take adequate precautions — such as proper employee screening — to ensure workplace security. If they do not, they may be held liable if work injuries occur.

Eye injuries are more common in Miami Beach and Florida workplaces than many people believe. These injuries can be caused by violence, debris, sparks, heavy machinery, or simple accidents in office. They can also be caused by falls and facial injuries caused by direct impact.

A workplace injury that affects your facial area or your eyes can affect your vision, can lead to excruciating pain, and can even end your career if you lose your vision as a result of your accident. In these cases, simply relying on workers compensation in Miami Beach or your community may not give you enough compensation to pay for your medical care, the extra personal care you will need, and the incidental expenses that you will incur.

Summer work can be a great experience for teens and young adults. It can help them earn money for school or other expenses and can help them build work experience and their resumes. A job can also help a teen develop skills and confidence.

Unfortunately, there is a darker side to summer jobs. Teens tend to be seasonal or part-time employees and studies have found that they can be especially at risk of work injury in Miami and other communities. There are a few reasons for this:

  • Teens may not be aware of the risks of their jobs
  • Young and seasonal workers may be more reluctant to speak up when they see dangerous conditions because they don’t want to lose their jobs
  • Teens may have fewer benefits and less training that permanent employees, making them more vulnerable to injury and more vulnerable once injury occurs

I had a lawyer on another case and I never spoke to the lawyer and I hated that I never knew what was going on in my case. Mr. Flaxman was in constant communication with me, explained everything to me, and his staff was really great too. My phone calls were always returned immediately. It was refreshing to be able to speak to my attorney personally. I would HIGHLY recommend Mr. Flaxman as an attorney to anyone who has been in an accident. Gloria
