Safety Experts Warn That This is the Season to Take Fire Safety Seriously

The holidays pose a number of dangers when it comes to burn injuries and fires. Some of the decorations that we use in our homes can pose a fire risk, and the distraction around this time of year can also make us less alert to fire hazards. To keep you and your family safe, make sure that you follow these tips:

1) Be cautious about outdoor lights.

When hanging outdoor lights, turn off the electricity to the supply outlet first and make sure that the connection is unplugged. Only hang outdoor lights that are intended for outdoor use and are in good condition. Throw out or repair any lights with frayed or damaged cords and connectors. Use a sturdy ladder and have someone help you to reduce the risk of falls. Keep electrical connectors off the ground and away from eaves troughs and puddles.

2) Use extra caution with candles.

Scented candles provide a pleasant glow and create a wonderful ambiance. Unfortunately, they can also pose a fire hazard. Never leave candles unattended if you are using them as part of your decor. This is especially important if you have pets or small children in your home. When using candles, make sure that you place them so that they are far away from paper, curtains, and anything else that may be flammable.

3) Always check indoor holiday lights before hanging them.

If there is any sign of damage to the cords, light bulbs, or connectors, make sure that you get the lights fixed or replaced before you use them. When buying strings of lights for your home, look for certification marks from an organization such as the CSA Group or any other accredited organization. You should also look for the certification mark on any electrical decorations or extension cords you using in your home during the holidays, since this mark shows that products comply with set standards for performance and safety. Never place indoor lights close to other decorations that may be flammable or close to curtains or other items that may be flammable materials. Indoor lights can overheat and pose a fire and burn injury risk in your Hollywood home. When hanging your lights, never use tacks or nails as this can create a fire hazard because it can damage the insulation. You can find insulated fasteners to keep your lights in place.

4) Clean your fireplace before the season starts.

While fireplace can be cozy, it can also pose a fire hazard if there is a buildup of soot and other materials in the chimney. Get your fireplace cleaned and inspected before you light it again. If you have a gas fireplace, it will also need to be inspected each year.

5) Check your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.

This is a good time to check the batteries in your carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms and test your alarms. Make sure that they are functioning correctly so that they can protect you and your family if something does catch on fire. This is also good time to review your emergency fire escape plan with your family.

I had a lawyer on another case and I never spoke to the lawyer and I hated that I never knew what was going on in my case. Mr. Flaxman was in constant communication with me, explained everything to me, and his staff was really great too. My phone calls were always returned immediately. It was refreshing to be able to speak to my attorney personally. I would HIGHLY recommend Mr. Flaxman as an attorney to anyone who has been in an accident. Gloria
