The Leapfrog Group has released its ratings of Florida hospitals and 24 facilities in the South Florida area have gotten an “A” grade for infection prevention and safety. 44 hospitals in the region were grades and only one got a “D” ranking, while 14 got a “B” and 5 were awarded a “C.” The hospitals were graded for safety, accident and injury prevention, and prevention of infection. The last Leapfrog Group report, in the Spring, gave only 22 area hospitals an “A” grade, so the rankings are good news for South Florida. While hospital scores do not ensure a good experience for patients, they can help patients make informed decisions about where to seek medical help.

Getting Serious About Truck Driver Health

A study published by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health earlier this year found that truck drivers are more likely than the general population to have higher-risk factors for chronic diseases and are more likely to smoke. The study showed that risk factors such as high cholesterol, poor sleep patterns, sedentary lifestyles, high blood pressure, obesity, smoking and other factors were more common in truck drivers than in Americans in general.

About 69% of drivers polled in the study were found to be obesity, an obesity rate that is twice that of American adults. About 88% of the truck drivers had at least one serious risk factor, while 54% of the general population has these types of risk factors for chronic disease.

Trucking Collisions and State Enforcement of Traffic Rules

Drivers or big rigs and tractor trailers are subject to more rules than motorists operating passenger cars. Traditionally, truckers have claimed that enforcement can vary widely by state, and now the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) has published a study that investigates that.

The ATRI looked at states by examining 11 different metrics related to enforcement. These metrics involved fatal and serious crashes per million vehicle miles traveled, roadside inspections with and without violations million vehicle miles traveled, and state money spent per Motor Carrier Assistance funding.
