Use Space Heaters Safely

While Florida is known for its warm and sunny weather, nights can still be cool and many of us want a cozy space heater to stay warm and comfortable. Space heaters range from simple and small devices to larger items which mimic the look and flames of a fireplace. In both cases, these products can be a safe and effective way to stay warm, but they do come with risks.

To avoid a fire in your Homestead or Florida home, follow these tips:

  • Don’t use fuel-burning heaters inside. Check to make sure any heater you use is intended for indoor use. Look for electric heaters rather than ones burning wood or other fuel—fuel-burning devices can give off carbon monoxide and may put you at greater risk of fires and carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Choose your heaters carefully. Look for the “UL” label and safety features such as automatic shut-off when the heater gets too warm or when it tips over. Look for heaters which are well-made and which have stay-cool handles for easy use. Check online reviews to find options in your price range.
  • Test for wear and tear. Whether you have had your heater for a while or have just unboxed it, examine it carefully before each use. Is the casing or cover cracked or bent in any way that would allow someone to touch the heat element? Are the cords frayed or damaged in any way? If so, replace or repair the heater before use.
  • Set up and use heaters carefully. Always use your heaters on a flat, stable, non-flammable surface, at least three feet from any flammable materials, such as curtains or furniture. Keep the heater well away from children and pets and make sure there is plenty of clearance around the entire appliance. Never leave the appliance unattended—even for a moment—and make sure it is off and unplugged when you’ll be away from home for an extended period of time.
  • Protect yourself from fire and carbon monoxide poisoning. Have working carbon monoxide and smoke detectors in your home, including close to or inside the room with the heater. Make sure there is a fire extinguisher close to the heater and have a fire escape plan.
