Staying Home After a Serious Injury: What You Need to Know to Stay Safe

Whether you have been in a traffic collision, have suffered a work injury at your Hollywood job, or have sustained any other serious injury which requires you to stay at your South Florida home to recover, keep in mind that the days and weeks following your injury are important. If you take risks during your recovery, you could end up facing complications and even re-injury.

To stay safe as you recover, make sure that you:

1) Visit your doctor as required.

Do not skip doctor’s visits or medications. When you do visit your physician, bring a pen and a paper to write down the instructions you are given about recovery or bring a friend or family member who can write things down for you. Ask plenty of questions. Ask what activities you need to avoid, what medications you are getting, what symptoms you need to be aware of. If you have questions in between doctor’s visits, make another appointment or contact the doctor’s office for help. Seek out a second opinion if you have concerns about your recovery or the care you are getting.

2) Don’t overdo.

A serious injury means your doctor will likely place some limits on what you can do. Perhaps you are told not to lift heavy objects or not return to work until you have healed. Use extra caution and common sense to avoid re-injuring yourself. Any physical injury means you likely cannot return to a regular workout regimen. If you have a head injury which makes you dizzy, climbing on a step ladder can be very dangerous. Take things easy and get plenty of rest as you recover to give your body a chance to heal.

3) Get help around the house.

If you need it, get a nurse at home or help with cleaning. You can hire a professional or get friends and family to help. Even a few hours a week of help with chores can make a big difference in ensuring you do not strain anything, injure stitches, or re-injure yourself.

4) Seek out emotional support.

Being seriously injured can be very upsetting and some patients who have suffered an injury report instances of anxiety, anger, depression, sleep disturbances, and other emotional challenges. Consider joining a support group; some are online if you cannot easily get around. If you notice you are depressed or not sleeping, get medical help at once, since emotional upset can inhibit your recovery.

5) Take care of your financial well-being.

Visiting doctors and specialists, getting help around the house, taking time off work, and everything else which is part and parcel of healing comes with a substantial price tag. Speak to a personal injury attorney about any claims you may have which can allow you to seek compensation. If you were injured at work, for example, you may be able to seek workers’ compensation. If you were injured in a traffic collision, you may have a Hollywood car accident claim.
