For real estate agents in Hollywood and other cities, the workplace can be dangerous. There have been instances where real estate agents have been attacked during showings and even killed. This job is dangerous because real estate agents are often in the field, meeting with others and they generally do so alone. In addition, open houses can be a danger because anyone from the community can walk in, and in some cases there may only be no one else present in the house during the showing.
If you are a real estate professional, there are a few steps you can take to stay safer:
- Try to have someone else with you: One of the easiest ways to reduce your risk is to work with another real estate agent. This can be especially useful since one of you can be speaking with the potential buyers while another person can be working on the paperwork, taking notes, or taking extra photos. If you can’t have someone with you, at least make sure someone knows where you are and when you’re expected back so they can raise the alarm if you don’t return.
- Use extra caution at showings: Agents are alone at showings and may be more at risk. If you need to take showings alone, consider texting a friend or family member so they know to check on you if you haven’t texted again. Use a tracking app so friends can see where you are.
- Stay alert and be prepared: When going to a showing or meeting in a house for any reason, always stay alert and undistracted. Have your paperwork and other materials ready and be aware of exits and entrances as well as any potential dangers in the house. Another way to stay alert is to keep up with the news and make sure you know about any attacks on real estate professionals in your area. This can help you take extra precautions and use the buddy system if there is an imminent danger.
- Trust your instincts: If something feels off, it’s safer to walk away and to ask for an appointment in your office or in a public space. Feel free to leave doors open so you can easily leave and you can be seen from the street. Don’t stay in a situation which feels dangerous.
- Use technology: Keep your phone on you and have it set up so you can easily contact help with the press of a button. You can also carry a panic button which easily connects you with emergency services should you need it.
- Train in self-defense: Many real estate professionals today take self defense classes to ensure they can protect themselves.
