Preventing Prom-Related Accidents

Prom should be a fun and carefree time that builds a lifetime of memories. Unfortunately, prom related accidents can and do happen. Serious injuries at formal dances can include Homestead limo accidents, slip and fall accidents, and even assault.

To help ensure your child does not suffer from these, be sure to follow these tips as you look for tuxedos, prom dresses, and limo rentals:

  • Know as much about the prom as possible. Understand where the dance will be taking place, what the activities are, how long activities take place, and who will be supervising. This way, if you have any concerns you can address them to the appropriate person. Ideally, formals should be held in public places where safety and security features are good.
  • Talk to your children about prom safety. Be especially careful to talk about the dangers of drunk driving and personal violence. Unfortunately, inhibitions can be lost during prom and bad decisions can be made as teenagers try to act possibly more mature than they are. Make sure that your children know they can talk to you if they have questions or concerns.
  • Make sure your child’s prom attire is safe. It’s a very minor point, but make sure that shoes aren’t too slippery on a dance floor. You can buy stickers for the bottoms of shoes which provides some traction.
  • Encourage your child to have a drink-free prom. You may want to work with the school to ensure the message gets sent to children that alcohol increases the risk of injuries.
  • Ask your child to check in or be home by a certain time. Even though prom night is all about freedom, make sure your child checks in so you know if anything is wrong. They do not have to check in all the time, but one or two check-ins can set your mind at ease.
  • Rent a safe driving service. If you are renting a limousine, double check the company to make sure that the drivers are safe. Have the contact information of the driver as well as their cell phone so you can contact them. It is often a better idea to rent a car rather than to permit your child to drive. Even though most prom goers are under the legal age of drinking, drinking does happen at formal dances. It is better to rent a car for friends together rather than run the risk of drunk driving accidents.

Unfortunately, even with precautions, injuries can happen at end of year events. If your child is injured at a formal off-campus event, it can be difficult to determine liability. Is the hotel where the event took place liable? Is the school liable?
