Preventing Injury on School Trips

School trips are an enriching activity and are something most students look forward to. Field trips in Homestead and South Florida allow children to have fun while also getting hands-on learning in the region’s many points of interest. Unfortunately, when schools fail to take reasonable precautions to keep children safe.

When you have school-age children looking forward to an excursion to a museum, historic site, or some other point of interest, here are a few tips you can use to reduce their risk of injury:

  • Make sure you know how students will be getting to and from the field trip. School bus accidents in Homestead and South Florida are a concern, so you may want to look up information about your school and district to find out about transportation options and your school’s safety policies.
  • Consider volunteering and make sure there are enough volunteers. If your child’s school is looking for volunteers, consider joining up to help supervise. Read over the consent form to find out as many details as possible, including how many adults will be supervising the trip. Make sure there are enough supervisors to keep an eye on all the students attending.
  • Update contact information. If something does go wrong, make sure the school can reach you easily.
  • Talk to your child, especially if they don’t usually ride in the school bus. Talk about school bus safety and the importance of listening to teachers and adults. This is an opportunity to have a conversation with your child about safety and to talk about some of the hazards which might occur on a field trip which they might not encounter in the classroom.
  • Know the terrain where your children will be. Read up about the route children will be taking to the school trip destination and read the website or other information available about the destination. If your child has special needs, is the museum or site accessible? What kinds of clothing and shoes would be safest for the terrain your child may encounter? Make sure your child is equipped correctly and is dressed in comfortable clothing and good walking shoes with good treads.
