How to Document Your Personal Injuries

Whether you’ve been injured in a sports injury, workplace accident, bicycle accident, or any other incident in Hollywood, Homestead, Miami, or anywhere in South Florida, one of the first things you will want to do is to start documenting your injuries and costs. This is because if there is a third party who may have been responsible for your injuries, you may have a claim under Florida law. You may be able to seek compensation for your injuries. Doing so can help you pay for the many costs you may be facing.

So how do you document? Start right away. If you can, take photos of the scene where the injury happened as soon as it happens. Even photos with your phone are fine. Take photos of the surrounding area, too. For example, if you’ve been in a motorcycle accident or bicycle accident, take photos of the road conditions and any surrounding area.

In addition, there are other ways you can get documentation after your injury:

  • Get copies of medical reports from the emergency room or any medical facility you visit
  • Keep a list of the days and times you’ve lost work
  • Get receipts for taxis to doctors’ appointments or any other location after your injuries
  • Keep a journal of the injuries you sustained and how they have affected your ability to live your life and perform everyday tasks
  • Keep a list of doctor’s appointments you have visited, including details about what was discussed
  • Keep receipts of any changes you’ve need to make to your home, such as installing grab bars in your bathroom, in order to navigate your injury
  • Keep receipts of any personal services you’ve needed, such as food delivery or home care or daycare, because you haven’t been able to do everyday tasks due to your injury
  • Keep receipts of any medical devices or any medicine you’ve had to take because of your injuries
  • Keep the letters, emails, or any documentation you’ve received from any insurance company
  • Write down any details of any phone calls you’ve had about your injury with insurance companies or anyone else
  • Write down anything you can remember about your injuries and the incident that caused them
  • Keep your clothing, any broken phone or broken property from the incident, and anything that may have contributed to the incident or injury (such as a mobile device that malfunctioned and burst into flame, for example)

What Can You Do With Your Documentation?

You will want to keep your documentation organized in a box or file. Ideally, keep gathering more information, more receipts, and more details until your case is settled. If you speak to a personal injury attorney after your incident, this documentation can be very useful. You’ll want your attorney to know you have this information, which can help prove what caused your injuries and may help you with your legal claim.
