Dating Safety Tips

At this time of year, many people are focusing on romance and dating. There lots of ways to meet new people to date, and one of the most common ones involves online dating and blind dates. If you’re meeting someone new for the first time, there are several dating tips you will want to follow to ensure you have a fun and safe time:

1) Tell someone where you’re going.

Tell a friend or family member where you’re going and when you will be back. Bring your cell phone with you. This way, if the date doesn’t go well, your friends will know where you are and when they can expect you back.

2) Learn about the person first.

Get to know someone gradually and remember that the impression someone makes online isn’t necessarily honest. Always check phone numbers, names and identities before deciding to meet.

3) Confirm identities before meeting.

Speak on the phone before meeting in person.

4) Meet in person and take a taxi or drive your car.

Meet in a public place where other people will be, to ensure your safety. Bring your own car or take a taxi so you are not alone in a vehicle with a virtual stranger controlling where you go.

5) Stay aware of your surroundings.

Stay sober and alert to your surroundings. Trust your instincts. If you feel uncomfortable at any time, politely excuse yourself and get home.

6) Take it slow.

Visit in each other’s homes only as you start to get to know the person. Personal safety is still the most important consideration and you’re less likely to become a victim of a crime or assault in Homestead or your community if you stay in public places before deciding to move your dates into more secluded settings.

7) Be careful about sharing personal information.

Before you meet someone in person, especially, be careful about sharing personal details, including home addresses and other identifying information. Unfortunately, identity theft, stalking and other issues are considerations with online dating, simply because you don’t know who you are meeting. Share personal information only after you have met in person and have gotten to know someone. If someone starts asking for money or wants you to send personal information or money, be aware that this is a considerable red flag.
