7 Changes You Can Make This Labor Day Weekend to Be Safer at Work

This Labor Day weekend, we celebrate workers and workplaces. This can also be a weekend where you create a few small changes which can have a big impact on your work life by helping you be more productive while also helping you to avoid workplace injuries in your Hollywood or Florida workplace.

These simple changes may help you cut your risk of back injuries, crushing injuries, head injuries, repetitive strain injuries, and other injuries:

  1. Create a new morning routine: Create a morning routine which gets you out of the door with fewer distractions and fewer difficulties. A morning routine that streamlines your day at the start allows you to have enough time to get to work so you’re not stressed out and driving distracted. A healthy morning routine can also set you up for success for the whole day.
  2. Create a new evening routine: Your evening routine should involve shutting off screens a few hours before bedtime. Instead of watching videos or reading blogs, use that time for relaxation. Unwinding at the end of the day can help you enjoy better quality sleep and avoiding screens or bright lights shortly before bedtime allows you to sleep more soundly, which reduces the risk of workplace injuries caused by fatigue.
  3. Monotask: Multitasking doesn’t work, research studies show. Multitasking could also be very distracting and can lead to workplace injuries. Wherever possible, focus on doing one task at a time and reduce distractions as far as possible so you can work effectively and safely.
  4. Get extra training: Check for training available from your workplace or from professional organizations in your industry. Training in safety measures or in work tasks helps you get ahead in your career but can also help you reduce injuries and can help you understand what the risks of your job are.
  5. Get some air: If you can, head outside during the work day or at least open a window. Fresh air can help keep you focused and alert and can help you if the air quality in your workplace isn’t ideal.
  6. Take breaks: Frequent breaks at work protect cognitive function and allow you to focus fully. They can keep you from over working and overexerting yourself, too.
  7. Gamify your work: If possible, consider creating challenges or small games with your tasks. For example, you may want to challenge your co-workers to complete a task in a specific way or by a specific time. You may want to pool resources together to offer an incentive or reward. Adding an element of challenge or even competition helps keep work fresh and makes it easier to focus on what you’re doing, especially if you are performing repetitive tasks. This can help reduce distraction and can help you stay focused so you avoid injury.
