6 Ways to Have a Healthier, Safer Year in 2019

2019 is hopefully full of new adventures and prosperity for you and your loved ones. No matter what you have planned for the next twelve months, hopefully your new year will be filled with health. Fortunately, many injuries in Homestead and other communities can be prevented with a few proactive tips and ideas.

These simple tips can help you get your New Year off to a good start:

1) Make sure your home is safe.

Go through your home and look for any safety hazards. Are there repairs you haven’t fixed that have resulted in poor lighting or uneven floors? Is there wear and tear on your electrical cords, rugs, carpets, or any other areas that can pose a fire hazard or tripping hazard? As you clean up after the holidays, it’s a good time of year to reconsider the safety of your home. Walk through your home room by room with an eye out for any possible hazards and fix them before they cause an injury.

Burn injuries in Homestead are no joke, so this is a good time to update your smoke detectors and fire escape plan. If you don’t have a fire extinguisher in your home, invest in one.

2) Work to prevent job injuries.

No matter where you work, workplace injuries in Homestead and other communities are a concern. Take another look at any employment manual or training material you may have received when you joined your workplace.

Keep in mind you have a right to a safe workplace. If you notice any unsafe conditions, report them and follow up to make sure the issues are fixed. Get to know occupational safety rules and what you may be expected to do to keep your workplace safe.

3) Mark your calendar now to remind yourself to take action to get safer.

Note down when you need to get your car checked, your oil changed, and take care of other maintenance tasks to keep your car functioning well. Also note when you need to replace batteries in your smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and when you need to handle other tasks to stay safe.

4) Take care of yourself to stay healthier and safer.

Eating healthy foods, exercising to stay fit, getting regular check-ups as needed, and getting adequate rest makes you healthier and ensures you are not in a workplace accident or a traffic collision because you are tired or ill due to preventable causes. Being fit and in good shape can even help you avoid trip and fall accidents, so take care of yourself!

5) Ease into exercise routines and work out smart.

At this time of year, many people are eager to work out or take up a new sport. Before you start working out, be sure to get input from a coach, trainer, and doctor to create a workout plan to get you in shape without putting you at undue risk of a sports injury.

6) Get smart on the roads.

Car accidents are a leading cause of serious injuries in Homestead and across South Florida. You can reduce your risk by driving defensively, taking care of your car, and only driving when you are sober and alert. Start building smart driving habits now.
